Yesterday Mark and I headed over the bridge to South Wales to take my mother out for lunch. Rather than going to the pub round the corner, Mum had suggested we go to a tearoom a couple of minutes’ drive away where she had been to a patchwork class in the Winter. It turned out the tea room overlooked one of the most beautiful gardens I have seen in a long while – at Wyndcliffe Court.
I am astounded that somewhere so lovely could be so close to my mother’s house without her mentioning it to us before! Had I known its loveliness I would have taken my proper camera with me. As it was I had to make do with my phone. The entrance charge was just £4; excellent value if it were for just one visit, but that £4 gets you admittance as often as you like for a year!! We had had thunderstorms in the night and thunder was still rumbling around the Welsh hills as we arrived, so we decided to have a very quick look around the garden before the rain started.
“Oh look”, exclaimed Mark, pointing at one of the sculptures, “boxing kangaroos!”. I looked, patted his arm in the affectionate, yet patronising way that annoys him so much and pointed out they were hares, not kangaroos. He will get his own back, but I made the most of a few moments smugness.

I should point out that this little garden is on two levels and my mother is half way up the steps, not kneeling in the flower beds!
As the rain became heavy, we made our way to the tea rooms. There were a couple of tables on a sort of large stone porch, so we could be dry but still enjoy the fresh air and the sound of the rain as we ate our soup and sandwiches.
In addition to a small shop selling a variety of pieces of artwork, there was a little second hand shop. I came home with quite a haul of glass and silver pieces; all for just £13!! I intend to use the jars to store my vintage buttons…
